Oliver Hecht

Oliver Hecht (born 2004) is a composer of concert and film music from Boston, Massachusetts. Hecht’s work tends to explore themes of nature, literature, and human connection. He draws inspiration from a wide array of musical styles, including American folk music, French impressionism, and various indie rock artists. Hecht’s music is interested in drawing out moments of sublimity and transcendence through a reliance on patterns, process, open harmonies, and negative space.

Hecht began writing music in high school, mostly for chamber ensembles. As a violinist, he has played in youth orchestras at New England Conservatory and Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras. He also taught in, and ran, the Brookline Music Program, which provides free music lessons for middle school students. 

He attended the Atlantic Music Festival in 2020 and 2021 where he studied composition under teachers such as Reiko Füting, Martin Bresnick, and Pierre Jalbert. In 2022, he wrote pieces premiered at the Brevard Institute and Lake George Music Festival. In 2024, Poems, his new piece for String Quartet, was premiered by the Dior Quartet at Mostly Modern Festival. That same year, he studied at the Longy Divergent Studio, where a new piece for Soprano, Viola, and Piano was premiered Longy School of Music faculty. Hecht is attending Oberlin College and Conservatory as a History and Composition double-degree candidate studying with Stephen Hartke.
